单词 pythagoras
释义

Pythagorasn.

Brit. /pʌɪˈθaɡ(ə)rəs/, U.S. /paɪˈθæɡərəs/, /pəˈθæɡərəs/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Pythagoras.
Etymology: < the name of Pythagoras (classical Latin Pȳthagorās , ancient Greek Πυθαγόρας ), ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician (6th. cent b.c.). Compare Pythagorean adj.In Pythagoras' theorem n. after post-classical Latin theorema Pythagoricum (1655 in the passage translated in quot. 1660 for Pythagoras' theorem n.). This is based on medieval Greek or earlier scholia on Euclid, discussing the invention of this theorem by Pythagoras, which in turn go back to the Byzantine Greek commentator Proclus: καὶ ἐστι τὸ θεώρημα τοῦτο Πυθαγόρειον ‘and this theorem is [called] Pythagorean’ ( Comm. Euclid's Elem. §305). Euclid himself does not mention Pythagoras.
Mathematics.
Pythagoras' theorem n. a theorem in Euclidean geometry stating that, for any right-angled triangle, the area of a square whose side is the longest side of the triangle is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares whose sides are the other two sides of the triangle. Also Pythagoras's theorem, theorem of Pythagoras. The theorem, which appears as the 47th proposition of the first book of Euclid's Elements, is commonly cited as: ‘the square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides’. The classical right-angled triangle is one with sides in the ratio 3:4:5: 32 + 42 = 52.In the United States the theorem is usually known as the Pythagorean theorem (see Pythagorean theorem n. at Pythagorean n. and adj. Compounds).
