Etymology: < post-classical Latin pythiambicus, adjective (1829 or earlier) < classical Latin Pȳthius Pythian (see Pythian n.) + iambicus iambic adj. Compare earlier Pythian verse n. at Pythian n. and adj. Compounds and later Pythian metre n. at Pythian n. and adj. Compounds.

A composite metre consisting of a dactylic hexameter (Pythian metre) followed by an iambic colon.There are two varieties according to whether the hexameter is followed by an iambic dimeter (as in Horace Epod. 14 and 15), or by an iambic trimeter (as in Horace Epod. 16); see also quot. 1832.
