Etymology: Apparently < French pâte sur pâte, name of a method of decoration introduced at Sèvres in the mid 19th cent. (although attestations from this date are not available) < pâte paste n. + sur on (9th cent. in Old French as soure ; < classical Latin super : see super- prefix) + pâte paste n. Compare pâte tendre n.
Ceramics.
A method of relief decoration formed by applying layers of white slip upon unfired porcelain; an article produced in this way. Frequently attributive.
