Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quadrāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin quadrāre quadrate v. With sense 2 compare Middle French cadrer , †quadrer (see quadrate v.).
Now Scottish. rare.
1. transitive. To square (a number). Cf. quadrate v. 1b. Sc. National Dict. records this sense as still in use in Aberdeenshire in 1914.
