Etymology: < classical Latin quadrāgēnārius (adjective) forty years old, in post-classical Latin also (noun) person forty years old (4th cent.) ( < quadrāgēnī (see quadragene n.) + -ārius -ary suffix1) + -an suffix. Compare French quadragénaire aged forty, aged between forty and forty-nine (1680; 1740 as noun; earlier in Middle French in senses ‘numbering forty’ (1569), ‘lasting forty years’ (1583)). Compare earlier quadragenarious adj.With the form quadrigenarian compare quadri- comb. form.
