Originally: a smaller deck situated above the half-deck of a sailing ship, covering about a quarter of the vessel, from which the captain or master commanded the vessel. Later: that part of the upper deck of a ship behind the mainmast or (with powered ships) approximately abaft of where the mainmast would be, traditionally reserved for the use of superior officers or more privileged passengers. Also figurative.
