Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin quadrumanus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin quadrumanus four-handed (4th cent.; also quadrimanus ; < classical Latin quadru- quadru- comb. form + manus hand: see manus n.1) + -ous suffix.The formation in quadru- rather than quadri- may result from association with classical Latin quadrupēs quadruped n. Compare later quadrimanous adj.
Chiefly Zoology.
Having, or involving the use of, four hands and feet with opposable digits; spec. of, relating to, or designating the former mammalian order Quadrumana so characterized, comprising all non-human primates (now rare); (in non-technical contexts) of the nature of an ape or monkey.
