Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin quadruped-, quadrupēs.
Etymology: < classical Latin quadruped-, quadrupēs (adjective) four-footed, (noun) four-footed animal, domestic animal, horse, in post-classical Latin also (adjective) having four metrical feet (4th cent.) < quadru- quadru- comb. form + pēs foot (see -ped comb. form). Compare Middle French, French quadrupède , adjective and noun (beginning of the 14th cent. as noun). Compare earlier quadrupeded adj.

An animal which has four feet; esp. a mammal.Until the 19th cent., often used as a technical term for terrestrial vertebrates other than birds (sometimes also excluding snakes), or specifically for mammals (excluding four-footed reptiles and amphibians). Now only as a descriptive term. Cf. tetrapod n. 1.
