Etymology: < post-classical Latin quadrupedalis consisting of four (metrical) feet (4th or 5th cent. in Augustine), four feet long (12th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin quadruped- , quadrupēs quadruped n. + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare Middle French quadrupedal (1480). With use as noun compare post-classical Latin quadrupedale quadruped (13th cent.), use as noun of neuter of quadrupedalis . Compare slightly earlier quadruped n., and earlier quadrupeded adj.
