单词 quadruplator
释义

quadruplatorn.

Brit. /kwɒˈdruːpleɪtə/, /kwəˈdruːpleɪtə/, U.S. /kwɑˈdruˌpleɪdər/, /kwəˈdruˌpleɪdər/
Inflections: Plural quadruplatores, quadruplators.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quadruplātor.
Etymology: < classical Latin quadruplātor public informer, person who multiplies by four < quadruplāt- , past participial stem of quadruplāre quadruple v. + -or -or suffix. With sense 2 compare quadruplate v., and also French quadruplateur (a1628).The exact origin of the sense ‘public informer’ is not certain, though there is probably some connection with classical Latin quadruplum a fourfold penalty (see quadruple n.), as suggested by ancient authors.
1. Roman History. An informer; a person paid to denounce another in a court. Now rare.
