Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin quaere, quaerere.
Etymology: < classical Latin quaere, imperative singular of quaerere (in post-classical Latin also querere ) to ask, inquire (see queer v.1). For later spellings of the word see query n.2 and discussion at that entry. Perhaps compare also quary n.
Now archaic and rare.
