Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quaestuārius.
Etymology: < classical Latin quaestuārius acting for financial gain < quaestus gain ( < the stem of quaerere to seek (see queer v.1) + -tus , suffix forming verbal nouns) + -ārius -ary suffix1. With use as noun compare post-classical Latin questuarius official appointed to grant indulgences on the gift of alms to the Church, pardoner (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources). Compare Middle French, French †questuaire (16th cent.). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (kwī·stiuˌări) /ˈkwiːstjuːərɪ/.
