Etymology: < Queenborough, the name of a town on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent + mayor n., probably after the eponymous character in Thomas Middleton's play The Mayor of Quinborough (compare quot. a1627).According to N.E.D. (1902) at Mayor, ‘the continued practice of electing mayors in some decayed boroughs..which had become mere villages or hamlets is a common matter of jesting allusion in the literature of the 17th c.’
