Etymology: Probably < queen n. + -ing suffix3. Compare later queen n. 11a and queen apple n. at queen n. Compounds 2. Compare also later reinette n. and rennet n.2An alternative derivation (compare quot. 1993) < an alteration of coin n. (compare later quoin n.; with reference to the angled shape of the fruit) cannot be substantiated and would be difficult to explain formally.
