Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Quarz.

Etymology: < German Quarz (earlier also Querz ; first half of the 14th cent. in Middle High German (Bohemia) as quarz ), of uncertain origin: perhaps a pet form (with -z , hypocoristic suffix) of Middle High German querch , variant of twerc dwarf (see dwarf n. and adj.); compare Fritz , pet form of Friedrich , Heinz , pet form of Heinrich , etc. For the association of dwarfs with German mineral names see discussions at kupfernickel n. and cobalt n.; compare also Norwegian dvergstein quartz, literally ‘dwarf-stone’. Compare Italian quarzo (1550), French quartz (1749; 1729 as quertz), Swedish kvarts (1685), Dutch kwarts (second half of the 18th cent.), all ultimately < German.An alternative etymology derives the German word either from Polish regional kwardy, variant of twardy hard, or from a corresponding (unattested) form (with kw-, kv-) of the cognate word in another West Slavonic language (compare Lower Sorbian twardy, Upper Sorbian twjerdy, Czech tvrdý, all in sense ‘hard’). The Slavonic words are < the same Balto-Slavonic base as Lithuanian tvirtas, Latvian tvirts, both in sense ‘hard, firm’; further etymology uncertain.

Mineralogy.

A common rock-forming mineral consisting of silica, SiO₂, which occurs as colourless or white hexagonal prisms or as polycrystalline masses, and in cryptocrystalline forms (cf. chalcedony n.).Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals and is an important constituent in granite, gneiss, and many other rocks. It belongs to the hexagonal crystal system and often occurs in forms coloured by impurities (as in agate, amethyst, citrine, opal, etc.). It often contains gold, and is mined and crushed for the purpose of extracting this. The piezoelectric properties of quartz have led to its use in electronic oscillator circuits (e.g. in clocks and watches, radio transmitters, and receivers, etc.), since a quartz crystal has a sharply defined natural frequency of vibration which can be used to regulate the frequency of the oscillations. Many varieties of quartz are denoted by distinguishing adjectives describing their structure, colour, etc.capped, milk. sapphire, smoky, star quartz, etc.: see the first element. Cf. rock crystal n.

A common rock-forming mineral consisting of silica, SiO₂, which occurs as colourless or white hexagonal prisms or as polycrystalline masses, and in cryptocrystalline forms (cf. chalcedony n.).Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals and is an important constituent in granite, gneiss, and many other rocks. It belongs to the hexagonal crystal system and often occurs in forms coloured by impurities (as in agate, amethyst, citrine, opal, etc.). It often contains gold, and is mined and crushed for the purpose of extracting this. The piezoelectric properties of quartz have led to its use in electronic oscillator circuits (e.g. in clocks and watches, radio transmitters, and receivers, etc.), since a quartz crystal has a sharply defined natural frequency of vibration which can be used to regulate the frequency of the oscillations.
