Etymology: < quartz n. + -ite suffix1, after French quartzite (attributed to Brongniart and Bonnard in J. F. d'Abuisson de Voissins Traité de Géognosie (1819) II. 174).
Geology.
Rock consisting mainly of quartz; a variety of this; spec. (a) a very hard sedimentary rock consisting of sandstone in which quartz grains are cemented with secondary silica (cf. orthoquartzite n. at ortho- comb. form 1); (b) a metamorphic rock formed by the recrystallization of sandstone or chert.
