Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French codignat.
Etymology: Apparently < French codignat fruit jelly (see codiniac n.), although the form of the first syllable is unexpected: perhaps altered by association with quince n.1, coyn n. (compare quinade n.). Compare earlier codiniac n., and also cotiniate n., quindiniac n.With the form of the final syllable compare earlier citonie quince ( < Anglo-Norman citonie quince (13th cent. or earlier) and its etymon classical Latin cotōneum , cotōnium , cydōneum , cydōnium quince, drink made from quince juice: see cydon n.):a1400 tr.
