Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: adaptation n., -ometer comb. form.
Etymology: < adapt- (in adaptation n.) + -ometer comb. form, after German Adaptometer (W. A. Nagel 1907, in Zeitschr. f. Augenheilkunde 17 201).
Ophthalmology.
Any of various instruments used to measure the adaptation of the eye (cf. adaptation n. 2b) to changes in the intensity or colour of light, used esp. in the assessment of dark adaptation and night vision.
