Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quiēscere.
Etymology: < classical Latin quiēscere to come to rest, to be quiet < the base of quiēs rest, sleep, tranquility (see quiet n.) + -ēscere (see -escent suffix). Compare earlier quiescent adj., quiescence n., quiescency n. Compare also earlier acquiesce v. and quiet v. 3.
1. intransitive. To become quiescent; to subside into.
