Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: rag n.2, doll n.1
Etymology: < rag n.2 + doll n.1 In sense 2 usually written as one word, and arising from the supposed tendency of the original breeding stock to go limp when picked up or held.
1. A doll made of rags or cloth, (now esp.) a doll made entirely of fabric, typically representing a child rather than a baby, and dressed in old-fashioned clothes. Also figurative: an insignificant or inconsequential person.
