Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit rāga.
Etymology: < Sanskrit rāga colour, passion, melody, a mode in music (also with vernacular pronunciation rāg ) < rañj- to become coloured, reddened, excited, enamoured < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek ῥέζειν to dye. Compare ragini n.
In Indian classical music: each of a number of melodic types used as tonal frameworks for composition and improvisation, based on a particular scale type and differentiated further by the relative frequency, strength, order, etc., of the notes used within this scale. Also: a piece of music based on such a framework. Also figurative.Some ragas were historically classed and represented as male (as opposed to the female ragini: see ragini n.).
