Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit rāgamālā.

Etymology: < Sanskrit rāgamālā set of verses, each illustrated by a painting, which describe the musical ragas and raginis as divinities or lovers (also with vernacular pronunciation rāgmālā ) < rāga raga n. + mālā garland (see mala n.).The word is used in Indian music to denote a series of (usually 36) ragas, each of which expresses a specific mood or sentiment.

In Indian art: a series of paintings based on poems inspired by the ragas (cf. raga n.). Now chiefly attributive.
