1. Botany (a) Of flowers: arranged in clusters or groups; (in later use) spec. arranged in racemes (raceme n. 2). (b) Of an inflorescence or a system of growth: characterized by continuing meristematic activity at the apex of the main stem, the flowers or lateral branches developing from axillary meristems. Opposed to cymose.A racemose inflorescence has older flowers at the base or on the outside; examples include, in addition to the raceme itself, the corymb, spike, and umbel.
