Etymology: < post-classical Latin quiescentia rest (4th cent.; < classical Latin quiēscent- , quiēscēns quiescent adj. + -ia -y suffix3); compare -ence suffix. Compare earlier quiescent adj.
1. The state or condition of being quiescent; quietness, stillness; inactivity, dormancy; an instance of this. Also: the action of making quiet or calm.
