Etymology: < post-classical Latin quietantia, quietancia (frequently from late 11th cent. in British sources (also as quittantia : see quittance n.); from 12th cent. in continental sources in this sense; from 11th cent. in continental sources in sense ‘surrender’) < quietant- , quietans , present participle of quietare quiet v. + classical Latin -ia -y suffix3; compare -ance suffix. Compare Italian quietanza (1289 as ketanza ). Compare earlier quittance n. 2. Compare also quiet v. 2 and quieting n.
