Etymology: < post-classical Latin quietation-, quietatio quietness, rest, repose (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources), earlier in sense ‘quittance, exemption, discharge’ (frequently from 12th cent. in British sources, also as quitatio (frequently from 13th cent. in British and continental sources)) < quietat- , past participial stem of quietare quiet v. + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1; compare -ation suffix. Compare Middle French quietacion quietness (late 14th cent. in an apparently isolated use), Catalan quietació action of quieting (1418), Spanish †quietación repose, peace of mind, serenity (1424 as quietaçión; rare), Portuguese quietação action of quieting, quietness (1572), Italian quietazione quietness, quittance (1477).
