单词 quietus est
释义

quietus estn.

Brit. /kwʌɪˌiːtəs ˈɛst/, /kwʌɪˈeɪtəs ɛst/, /kwɪˈeɪtəs ɛst/, U.S. /ˈkwaɪədəs ˈɛst/
Forms: late Middle English– quietus est, 1700s quiet test (irregular). Also occasionally with capital initial(s).
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quiētus est.
Etymology: < classical Latin quiētus est, literally ‘he is quiet’, in post-classical Latin also (of a debtor) ‘he is discharged’ (8th cent. as quietus sit let him be discharged, and see note) < quiētus quiet adj. + est is (see be v.).Post-classical Latin quietus est is the standard phrase in English royal accounts noting that a debtor (most commonly the sheriff) has discharged his liability for a debt to the king through payment or allowances (from 1130 in Birtish sources). The phrase is apparently not attested in Latin in sense 2. In quot. 1530 at sense 2 perhaps with punning allusion to sense 1.
Now chiefly historical.
