Etymology: < Irish rann (Early Irish rann ), of uncertain origin; perhaps originally a spec. use of Early Irish rann part, partition (although this has a different gender), cognate with Welsh rhan and perhaps ultimately < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin pars part n.¹The form raun reflects the pronunciation of the Irish etymon.
