Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Ranvier.
Etymology: < the name of Louis Antoine Ranvier (1835–1922), French histologist, who described the structures (as anneau constricteur and étranglement annulaire) in 1871 ( Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 73 1171) and 1872 ( Arch. de physiol. normale et pathol. 4 129).
Histology.
node of Ranvier n. (also Ranvier node, Ranvier's node) any of the gaps in the myelin sheath that occur between neighbouring Schwann cells or oligodendrocytes along a myelinated nerve fibre.
