Etymology: < quin- (in quinine n.) + acr- (in acridine n.) + -ine suffix5. Compare French quinacrine (1936 or earlier).
Pharmacology and Biochemistry.
An antiprotozoal agent used esp. to treat malaria (originally) and giardiasis and also for histochemical staining.Chemical name: 3-chloro-7-methyl-9-(1-methyl-4-diethyl aminobutylamino)acridine; C23H30N3OCl.The International Nonproprietary Name and British Approved Name (1996) for the compound is mepacrine.
