Etymology: < Malay adat custom, convention, rule, law, customary law (Indonesian adat) < Persian ʿādat habit, custom < Arabic ʿādat-, ʿāda habit, custom, usage, practice. Compare Dutch adat (1818 or earlier).
In the Islamic regions of South-East Asia: custom, accepted practice; (also) customary law.
