Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: radio- comb. form2, -phony comb. form; radio- comb. form3, -phony comb. form.
Etymology: Originally (in quot. 1880 at sense 1) < radio- comb. form2 + -phony comb. form, after French radiophonie (E. Mercadier 1880, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 91 929). In later use < radio- comb. form3 + -phony comb. form. Compare slightly later radiophonic adj. With sense 2 compare earlier radiophonics n. 2.
1. Originally: any of various techniques for producing or transmitting sound or electrical signals using beams of light; esp. = photophony n. at photophone n. Derivatives. In later use: the theory or technique of transmitting sound using radio waves; (more generally) radio broadcasting. Now historical.
