Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: quina n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: < quina n. + -ic suffix, partly after French kinique (in acide kinique: Vauquelin 1806, in Annales de chimie 59 167; also quinique (1827 or earlier)), itself apparently after German Chinasäure (Hofmann 1790, in Chemische Ann. 2 316).
1. Chemistry.
a. quinic acid n. a crystalline carboxylic acid found in cinchona bark and in various fruits and leaves, and used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals.Quinic acid has a cyclic structure. Formula: C6H7(OH)4COOH.
