Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish quínoa.
Etymology: < South American Spanish quinua (a1550), formerly also †quínoa (c1565) < Quechua kínuwa.
The small seeds of a tall annual goosefoot, Chenopodium quinoa (family Chenopodiaceae), which are considered a valuable food source because of their high protein content. Also: the plant itself, originally cultivated as a food plant in parts of the Andes and now grown more widely.
