Etymology: < post-classical Latin quinquagena set of fifty psalms (from late 13th cent. in British sources), title of each of the three sections of a work by St Augustine on the psalms (late 15th cent. in work titles) < classical Latin quīnquāgēnī fifty each < quīnquāgintā fifty (see quinquagint n.) + -ēnī , suffix forming distributive adjectives (see nonagenarian n.). Compare French quinquagene (1519).
