Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French quintal; Latin quintale.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French quintal (c1220 in Old French) and its etymon post-classical Latin quintale (12th cent.; 14th cent. in a British source; also as quintallus (from 12th cent. in British sources), quintile (c1070)) < Arabic qinṭār (see kantar n.). Compare Old Occitan quintal (a1195), Catalan quintal (1242; 1150 as chintar), Spanish quintal (c1200; 1176 as quintar), Portuguese quintal (1361), Italian quintale (1305; a1300 as chintale).
(a) A unit of weight equal to one hundredweight, originally 100 lb (approx. 45.4 kg; now chiefly historical), later 112 lb (approx. 50.8 kg). (b) In the metric system: a unit of weight equal to 100 kg (approx. 220 lb).
