Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Quintole.
Etymology: < German Quintole (1812 or earlier), probably < either Italian quinto (see quintetto n.) or classical Latin quīntus fifth (see quint n.1) + -ole (in German Triole triole n.). Compare earlier sextole n., slightly later triole n., and also slightly later quintuplet n. 1b.
Music. Now rare.
A group of five notes of equal time-value written to be played in the time of four; = quintuplet n. 1b.
