Etymology: < the name of FitzRoy James Henry Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan (1788–1855), from 1854 British general in the Crimean War, who is said to have used this style of coat following the amputation of his arm after the Battle of Waterloo.

An overcoat or (later more generally) other garment in which each sleeve continues in one piece up to the neck (see also quot. 1881).This style of sleeve produces a larger, looser armhole than a conventional set-in sleeve.
