Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Quirītes.
Etymology: < classical Latin Quirītes (also occasionally in singular Quirīs) Roman citizens; further etymology unknown. Compare Middle French, French quirites (1354 or earlier; also in singular quirite).Classical Latin Quirītes was commonly connected by the ancients with the Sabine town of Cures, perhaps originally referring to the Sabine element in the Roman population. In quot. c1425 Lydgate derives the word from the name of the god Quirīnus (see Quirinal adj. and n.).
