单词 radman
释义

radmann.

Brit. /ˈradman/, U.S. /ˈrædmæn/
Inflections: Plural radmen, radmans.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: English rād , man n.1
Etymology: < Old English rād (see road n.) + man n.1 Compare earlier radknight n.Currency in Old English is implied by Anglo-Norman radman (1086 in Domesday Book: see below), post-classical Latin radmannus (1086, 12th cent. in British sources), rudmannus (1285 in a British source). The irregular English plural radmans is sometimes used by historians in imitation of the forms found in Domesday Bk.; it is uncertain whether these Anglo-Norman forms with plural -s reflect unfamiliarity with the Old English mutation plural, or simply the substitution of a regular plural pattern in an assimilated loan:1086 Domesday Bk. (1783) I. f. 174v/2 [Phillimore: Worcs. 8. 10a] In poiwic... Ibi fuerunt viii radmans... Ipsi radmans secabant ina die in anno.1086 Domesday Bk. (1783) I. f. 270/1 [Phillimore: Cheshire (between Ribble & Mersey) R 6. 5] Rex E. tenuit Peneverdant... Sunt in dominio.. vi burgenses et iii radmans.Compare Old English rǣdemann horseman ( < rǣde mounted ( < a variant (with i-mutation) of the same base as rād : see road n.) + man n.1).
