Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Raffinat.

Etymology: < German Raffinat substance which has been refined (early 19th cent. or earlier with reference to sugar, 1913 or earlier with reference to oil) < raffinieren to refine (18th cent.; < French raffiner : see refine v.) + -at -ate suffix¹. Compare French raffinat (1933 or earlier with reference to oil), and also pétrole raffiné (1890), raffiné (noun) (1936), both in sense ‘refined oil’.

Manufacturing Technology.

The refined fraction which results after the removal of impurities from a liquid, esp. oil, by solvent extraction.The term was first used in connection with the solvent extraction process invented by the Romanian chemical engineer L. Edeleanu c1908 and introduced on a commercial scale at Rouen c1911.
