单词 raffing
释义

raffingadj.

Brit. /ˈrafɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈræfɪŋ/, Scottish English /ˈrafɪŋ/, /ˈrafɪn/
Forms: 1700s– raffan, 1800s raffin, 1800s– raffing.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: raff n.3, -ing suffix2.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < raff n.3 (compare raff n.3 4) + -ing suffix2. Sc. National Dict. (at Raff) records the word as still in use in Perthshire in 1967. Although Sc. National Dict. enters the word under Raff v., there appears to be little evidence for such a verb, which is apparently only recorded in various editions of Jamieson (the explanation offered in quot. 1825 that the verb may be a variant of rave v.2 is phonologically unlikely). Compare:1825 J. Jamieson Etymol. Dict. Sc. Lang. Suppl. at Raff To raff, perhaps a provincial variety of rave, Gall[oway].1881 Jamieson's Etymol. Dict. Sc. Lang. (new ed.) II. 602/2 To raff, to abound, to overflow; generally applied to mirth or fun. Loth[ian].
Scottish. Now rare.
Merry, hearty; boisterous.
