Etymology: < the name of Ragusa (now Dubrovnik: see Ragusan n. and adj.) + -ian suffix 1, partly (as adjective) after Middle French Ragusien, adjective (1568 in the passage translated in quot. 1585 at sense B.; compare French †Ragusien , adjective and noun, rare). Compare post-classical Latin Ragusia , rare variant of the name of Ragusa (13th cent.). With use as noun compare earlier Ragusan n. In quot. 1975 at sense A. rendering Spanish ragusino.With forms in -ean compare -ean suffix.
