ragwortn.2

Forms: 1500s raggewoorte, 1500s ragworte, 1600s–1700s ragwort.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from German. Etymon: German Ragwurz.
Etymology: Apparently < German Ragwurz any of several plants of the genus Ophrys (although this is first attested slightly later: 1560 or earlier), < †rag stiff (Middle High German rag , probably related to ragen to stand upright, to protrude, of uncertain origin; perhaps < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek κρόσσαι battlements: see crossopterygian adj. and n.) + -wurz wort n.1 (with assimilation of the second element to wort n.1), so called with allusion to the male member, on account either of the plant's appearance or of its use as an aphrodisiac. Probably influenced in form by ragwort n.1
Obsolete.
The early purple orchid, Orchis mascula.
