Origin: A borrowing from Turkish. Etymons: Ottoman Turkish rāhatülhulkūm, rāhat-ı lokum.
Etymology: < written Ottoman Turkish rāhatülhulkūm (colloquial rāhat-ı lokum) < colloquial Arabic rāḥat al-ḥalqūm throat's ease < rāḥat- , rāḥa ease + al , definite article + ḥalqūm , variant of classical Arabic ḥulqūm throat. Compare Turkish lokum lokum n.The expression ‘lumps of delight’ (see quot. 1861) may result from association with Turkish lokma < Arabic luqma ‘morsel, bit’. In β. forms with transposition of the elements, apparently within English: no such forms are attested in Turkish. The word is occasionally found in the Arabic form; compare also quot. 1846.1935 ‘Countess Morphy’ Recipes All Nations 767 The Turks are extremely fond of sweetmeats..and among the most popular is rahat el halkum. Make a thick syrup..adding..lemon juice..starch..almonds, pistachio nuts..hazel nuts..cut into squares.
