Etymology: < German Rauschpfeife shawm or similar woodwind instrument (1511 as russpfeif , a1518 as rauschpfeiffe ; compare quot. 1939 at sense 2), kind of organ stop (1511 as rauschpfeiffe (compare quot. 1964 at sense 1)) < †Rausch reed (see rush n.1) + Pfeife pipe n.1 Compare Middle Dutch ruuspipe (14th cent.; Dutch ruispijp), Middle Low German (rare) rūspīpe.In German the first element was reinterpreted at an early date as rauschen to rustle, murmur, make a low, continuous noise, of imitative origin (compare note at rush v.2); a similar development took place in Dutch. The plural form in -n is after the German plural form.

Since the mid-17th c. the stop was treated as a mixture, often 3-rank... In the 18th c. it was enlarged further... The original meaning of the word had long been forgotten: to Praetorius already it was a ‘rustling’ pipe (from [G.] rauschen, to rustle).
