Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ravelin.
Etymology: < Middle French ravelin (1450 as ravellin , 1500 as revellin , a1553 as ravelin ; French ravelin ), probably (with unexplained alteration of the first syllable) < Italian rivellino , revellino (both 15th cent.), of uncertain origin, perhaps a diminutive formation < riva riva n. Compare Italian †ravellino (1555, apparently after French), and also Spanish revellín (1572 as rebelín), Portuguese revelim (1627; 1571 as reuelins), rebelim (17th cent.).In α. forms with alteration of the ending after words in -ing suffix1. N.E.D. (1903) gives only the pronunciation (ræ·vlin) /ˈrævlɪn/.
1. Fortification. A detached outwork, constructed beyond the main ditch and in front of the curtain, and consisting of two faces forming a salient angle. Cf. redan n. 1a. Now historical.
