单词 rainworm
释义

rainwormn.

Brit. /ˈreɪnwəːm/, U.S. /ˈreɪnˌwərm/
Forms: see rain n.1 and worm n.
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: rain n.1, worm n.
Etymology: Originally cognate with or formed similarly to Old Saxon reganwurm (Middle Low German rēgenworm ), Old High German reganwurm (Middle High German regenwurm , German Regenwurm ) < the Germanic base of rain n.1 + the Germanic base of worm n. In later use independently re-formed < rain n.1 + worm n., chiefly after forms in other Germanic languages, as German Regenwurm, Danish regnorm (beginning of the 18th cent.), and perhaps also Dutch regenworm (1563 in transferred use denoting a sausage, 1567 (as †reghenworm ) denoting the animal). Compare earthworm n. Dict. Amer. Regional Eng. at that entry records the word from various areas which show German settlement (e.g. Pennsylvania and Wisconsin); this U. S. regional use is apparently after German.
Any of various kinds of worm commonly found on or near the surface of the ground after rain, esp.: (a) the common earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris (now U.S. regional and rare); (b) a large terrestrial nematode of the family Mermithidae, esp. Mermis nigrescens.
