Etymology: < the name of Martin Heinrich Rathke (1793–1860), German anatomist, who described the diverticulum in 1838 ( Archiv f. Anat., Physiol. u. wissenschaftl. Med. 482). In sense 1 after French poche de Rathke and German Rathke'sche Tasche (both P. Albrecht 1884, in Biol. Centralbl. 4 629).

1. Embryology. In the genitive, and with of, esp. in Rathke's pouch. Designating a hollow sac of ectoderm that extends from the roof of the oral cavity towards the floor of the forebrain in the vertebrate embryo, and from which the anterior lobe and pars intermedia of the pituitary gland develop.
