Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ratiōcinātīvus.
Etymology: < classical Latin ratiōcinātīvus of or concerned with reasoning, in post-classical Latin also (of conjunctions) expressive of ratiocination (4th cent. in grammarians) < ratiōcināt- , past participial stem of ratiōcinārī ratiocinate v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Middle French ratiocinatif that shows good sense, that employs reason (c1370). Compare earlier ratiocination n.On the pronunciation see ratiocinate v.
